Sonia would say that she never really decided to become an artist...she has always been one. True, she took every class she could, including all four years of high school elective and the four and a half years it took at The University of Texas at Austin to earn her BFA in Studio Art. But the deciding factor has always been the drive to create, to translate, and manipulate in interesting ways the world the way she sees it.
Her subjects include her friends, family, and iconic and inspiring animals and objects. She loves to honor the awkward and comical aspects of social situations and character flaws, usually choosing to uphold the flaws as passing institutions that help us discover the truths about ourselves. Surounded by nutty animals and her 3 children, there is no lack of inspiration... and years of ancient and mythological studies play an important roll in the development of great characters.
But endless curiosity with the natural world around her also finds its way onto her canvases in a gentle romantic way that's full of nostalgic longing for peaceful places and moments.
